Our trip to Croatia, a trip down memory lane!
It's been a few weeks now, but yeah, Suzanne and I went on holiday. For the first time in five years, not counting the family-related trips and weekends on the boat.
We decided it was about time, since we've been busy with the house, the job and everything. So, back in january, we booked a two week holiday to Croatia. Back when I was a kid, early in my teens, our family used to vacation often in what was then called Yugoslavia and my last visit was when I was 14 or 15.
You can imagine I was curious to what the war had done to the country and that which I had known for many years to be vacation.
We packed stuff for two weeks into the Panda and left on a monday evening in September, ready to drive a mere 1350 kilometers. We encountered fog, rain, roadworks but persisted and arrived in Muggia Italy around eleven in the morning. We drank our first Italian coffee (which was a little too strong to Suzanne's taste) on the terrace near the harbour and knew our holiday had started. Even though we needed to drive a little further before we arrived at our destination, Umag.
The following two weeks (I'm not going to write a complete diary on every day for two weeks you know) we had a system: one day of activity, one day of rest.
And it was ideal! We made some cool road trips, trips down memory lane and visited Venice (yes, during the Regatta Storica), the Postojna Caves and celebrated my birthday.
Just the two of us in a little restaurant called Ribic, near the salt pans of Secolvje. We loved it! After that, we visited Vojko, the propriator of Pension Palma, the pension where we used to vacation. He was very surprised to see us and we had a blast with him and his family. We took about 1500 pictures (of which we chose 600 to put in an old-fashioned photo album), drove well over 3500 kilometers in total (the Panda did an awesome job) and decided we'll go back to Croatia some day because it's much more then just Istria.
And it's an awesome country, I can tell you that. Of the 1500 photo's I chose a few to post here, to give you an idea! I'm already looking forward to our next vacation, whenever that may be. We're sure as hell not going to wait another five years, I can promise you that much!
